Garden beds and gardens for lease have a clear advantage: tenants only have to tend and harvest their vegetables. The experts take care of sowing and planting.
Anyone who wants to become a farmer outside of Berlin's allotment gardens, community gardens or their own balcony can rent a small piece of land. Gardening usually takes place from May to October. The garden beds and gardens for lease are usually located on the outskirts of the city or just beyond the city limits. Tenants often have the choice between different sizes and several business models.
The garden beds and gardens are often around 25 square meters in size. Depending on the provider, there are also smaller areas. The cheapest option is usually an empty bed that tenants plant, maintain and water themselves. Automatic watering or pre-planting with different types of vegetables, salads or herbs by experts costs extra. There is often a creative section in the pre-planted beds where tenants can implement their own ideas. However, the premium models themselves also need to be tended and cared for.
The effort is worth it. During the season, which lasts around six months, tenants can harvest 20 to 30 varieties of - often organic - vegetables. In addition to the plants, the landlord of the field also provides basic gardening tools, water, expert advice and a cultivation plan. Once the season is over, the providers ensure that the soil recovers and can be cultivated again in the spring.
There are garden beds for lease in and around Berlin in Pankow, Baumschulenweg, Rudow, Gatow, Bernau, Wartenberg, Ahrensfelde, Großziethen and Wildau (as of March 2025, subject to change). Some of the spaces are easily accessible by public transport, for others it is essential to take a bike or drive. Tenants should not underestimate the time factor of the journey. Especially if they water the plants themselves, they have to get there every day when it's dry and hot.
How much time the tenants have to spend on tending, caring for and harvesting depends primarily on the size of the bed and the weather. At the beginning of the season, when the weeds are sprouting, there is more to do than in October, when the beds are almost harvested. If it doesn't rain, you need to allow extra time for watering. If you don't have much time, you can invite friends or family to help at the beginning and share the bed and the harvest.
