Badespaß im See

The Groß Glienicker Lake is located in the southwest of Berlin and forms part of the border between Berlin and Brandenburg. It offers two bathing places on the Berlin shore.

The Groß Glienicker Lake is one of the clearest lakes in Berlin. It is fed from groundwater and is 11.25 metres deep at its deepest point. Part of the lake and the shore zones are located in the Gatow, Kladow and Groß Glienicke landscape conservation areas. On the lake shore on the Berlin side, visitors will find several sunbathing lawns, beach volleyball courts, playgrounds and boat rentals.

Swimming in the Groß Glienicker See

The Groß Glienicker See has an excellent water quality with great visibility thanks to low algae growth. In the south-east of the lake, the bathing area "Moorloch" offers a sunbathing lawn and lifeguard supervision. The bathing area "Pferdekoppel" in the northeast is a small sandy beach. In addition to these two official bathing sites, access to the lake is also possible at other shore locations.

Facts about the Groß Glienicker See

In the past, the border between West Berlin and the GDR ran through the middle of the lake. It was marked by buoys. West Berliners were allowed to swim in the lake up to these buoys and to skate on the ice in winter. For GDR citizens, however, access was strictly forbidden.
