Picture Gallery in Sanssouci

View of the Bildergalerie (Picture Gallery) in Sanssouci Park in Potsdam.

The magnificent Bildergalerie in the park of Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam is the oldest surviving independent museum building in Germany.

The Bildergalerie of Sanssouci (Sanssouci Picture Gallery) dates back to the 18th century. The gallery building was commissioned by Frederick the Great between 1755 and 1764 and built next to the Sanssouci and New Chambers palaces for his collection of paintings. Today, over 140 paintings from the 16th to 18th centuries can be seen in the Picture Gallery. These include works by Caravaggio, Anton van Dyck and Rubens. The paintings are complemented by statues from the 18th century and antique busts.
