“As You Like It” is THE classic Shakespearean comedy, a play that remains politically relevant even today and is much more than “just” a comedy. The play portrays a diverse, multicultural society in which initial turmoil is resolved through understanding and reconciliation.

The production was staged in collaboration with the renowned British Shakespeare specialist Ben Crystal, who was working in Berlin for the first time. He is himself an actor at the Globe Theatre in London and an internationally sought-after director.

The production presented by the Globe Ensemble derives its particular charm from the combination of bilingualism and the ‘Quick-Raise’ method developed by Ben Crystal. This approach combines historical performance practices from Shakespeare’s time with modern acting techniques. The rehearsal process, concentrated into just a few days and strongly ensemble-oriented, encompasses both intensive physical work and an in-depth exploration of the text. Ben Crystal’s ‘Quick-Raises’ are characterised by their playful vitality as well as their physical and emotional intensity. The performances take place in the round and require no elaborate set design, using only a few props. The scenes are neither staged nor strictly choreographed; there are no pre-agreed performance conventions. Instead, the performers enjoy great freedom of movement. The constant alternation between German and English dialogue creates additional tension and moments of surprise, making every performance a unique experience – every evening is new and different!

What it’s about: A pair of twins are shipwrecked and wash ashore separately in Illyria. Viola disguises herself as a man and serves Duke Orsino, tasked with wooing Olivia on his behalf—who, however, falls in love with Viola. When Viola’s brother Sebastian appears, a turbulent game of confusion ensues. Meanwhile, Olivia’s uncle Toby, his friend Andrew, and a plan for revenge against the prudish Malvolio create additional chaos.

Featuring Astrid Köhler (Olivia/Antonio), Nadja Schimonsky (Viola/Maria), Wiebke Acton (Feste), Adrian Stowasser (Malvolio/Sebastian/Officer), Benjamin Krüger (Orsino/Toby/Sea Captain), Philipp Myk (Andrew/Valentine/Priest)

Director: Ben Crystal, dramaturgy & translation: Christian Leonard, costumes: Hanna Zietlow und Lilly Sun Maennig, music: Bernd Medek
