The Shadows

Shieveh Theater Company

What if the tragedies of antiquity were to live on today? Three people find themselves caught up in fates involving war, flight and loss. The Shieveh Theater Company from Tehran weaves real-life stories together with the big questions of guilt, power and responsibility.

The Shieveh Theater Company exists for over 25 years and its productions have been staged at festivals all over the world. The group already moved the HAU audience in 2024 with their production “The Child”.

“The Shadows”, which premiered at Theater der Welt in July 2026, also addresses questions of guilt, the law and personal responsibility – not in a theoretical sense, but in an existential and political one. Emerging from a sensitive and searching investigation into the conditions of today’s world, the work was born through the discovery of three real and documented stories whose emotional and existential trajectories reveal a striking affinity with the timeless figures of Jocasta (Oedipus), Antigone, and Medea. Thereby it breathes new life into these mythological figures, allowing their voices and destinies to resonate within the crises, fears, and contradictions of our own time. How do stories of fate, loss, resistance, and desperation continue to shape human experience across centuries?

The creative process behind “The Shadows” was profoundly influenced, particularly in recent months, by the artistic team’s lived experiences in Iran – months characterized by heightened instability, emotional intensity and an increasingly precarious daily existence. During this intense and turbulent period, the team felt more and more acutely the heavy burden of the shadows weighing upon their lives and existence. This awareness did not remain abstract; it gradually permeated the creative process itself, altering its rhythm, its tone and its inner necessity.

In this way, the work has transformed into a sensitive resonance with the present, into an artistic space in which experience, memory and perception are interwoven, in which vulnerability finds a voice, and in which the creative process attempts to give form to that which often remains on the fringes of the expressible.

Production: Afsaneh Mahian / Shieveh Theater Company.
