A Shakespeare play is performed without a director and with just one rehearsal. This results in a very free-form, wild performance in which the actors rely on themselves, one another and the audience – and, of course, on the prompter.

 

The actors are given only a script with stage directions about a month before the performance. They learn their parts by heart. Possibly their cue lines as well. Can’t do any harm.

 

Then everyone involved meets the evening before the performance for a sort of coordination rehearsal to run through the play once. Requests regarding props, costume pieces and so on are discussed, and some are even taken into account. But really, the aim is to let the production emerge with as few theatrical aids as possible. Just the text, the actors and the audience.

 

Every performance is unique. The audience is part of the action. There is drinking, eating, playing and celebrating. Shakespeare’s eloquence, the ensemble’s enthusiasm for performing and, most importantly, the audience’s shared excitement combine to create a unique experience. Come and be part of it!
