In “Monga”, Jéssica Teixeira encounters Julia Pastrana, who was exhibited as an attraction in so-called “freak shows” in the 19th century. Using her own body as a starting point, Teixeira recounts Pastrana’s life and fate, creating a poetic performance accompanied by live music. The Brazilian artist Jéssica Teixeira traces the 26-year life of the dancer, performer and singer – a life marked by inhumane working conditions and exploitation, and in which her body, even after her death, was still forced to serve the colonial and ableist sensationalism of others. In doing so, she uses her own body as the raw material of the dramaturgy: bathed in the glaring light of a ring light, Teixeira stares back, mirroring and exposing the onlookers, keeping the audience suspended between intimacy, humour and shock. “I’m not afraid of my body. Would you feel more comfortable if it were otherwise?” An evening blending performance, poetry and a live concert, at which, of course, the odd shot of cachaça is a must…Jéssica Teixeira is a Brazilian actress, director, writer and producer who, in her artistic work, uses her own body as a starting point for exploring identity and physicality. She has received numerous awards for her theatre work.
