One of the most adventurous escape and revenge stories in world literature in a new version for the stage.

The Count of Monte Cristo is one of the most exciting and profound novels ever written. It follows the fate of Edmond Dantès, a young man who seems to have it all:worldly success as a young ship captain and romantic love with the beautiful Mercedes. But everything is taken from him by a jealous lover, a greedy banker and a corrupt judge. Edmond is thrown into prison for fifteen long years.

A dying prisoner reveals the secret hiding place of a great treasure, and Edmond organises one of the most famous escapes in all of literature. The riches are found on the island of Monte Cristo, where Dantès becomes the count. He sets out on his terrible revenge...

But as his furious revenge takes on ever greater proportions, how do we, the audience, feel about his cruelty? Both the book and the play, adapted by Paul Stebbings and the Théatre du Héron, raise questions about justice and our own behaviour in situations of great misfortune.
