What country do you think you live in? Karl-Konrad knows the answer, and it's different than you might expect: the key is Angela Merkel. Because her big moments over the last 35 years have also been our big moments. In the east, as in the west. But how on earth did she, the daughter of a Protestant pastor, a woman from the east, become the most powerful politician in the world? And what has it turned us into?

Karl-Konrad has come to talk about Angela Merkel. For him, it’s about controlling the narrative. Wasn't he one of the fishermen Angela Merkel visited in Stralsund in the 1990s, shortly before they had to give up their work? Didn’t he dictate the article for the FAZ that was supposed to topple the Palatine Helmut Kohl and, eventually, the Swabian Schäuble? From the margins of society, from the East, author Juliane Hendes has her protagonist describe the path of "our country" to the here and now. At the same time, she raises the question of how identity and everyday political life are so interwoven that they can no longer be separated. After the grand tattoo for Angela Merkel, one last question remains for all of us: What do we do now?

Juliane Hendes and Romy Rexheuser grew up in the geographical east of this country during the transformative period of the 1990s and 2000s. They are connected by an ongoing debate about their origins and (East German) homeland and the resulting questions about their own political attitudes. Tim Hillemacher is a photo artist from Düsseldorf. His camera primarily captures people in dynamic environments, thereby raising questions about how people are influenced by their surroundings.
