Giuseppe Verdis (1813–1901) letzte opera buffa nach Shakespeares Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor und Heinrich IV.  – 1893 in La Scala uraufgeführt – webt feinsinnigen Humor nahtlos mit profunder Humanität.

Der titelgebende Ritter Sir John Falstaff verkörpert in triadischer Komik die Hybris des Alters, während die Windsor-Frauen als trionfale Agent*innen weiblicher Vernunft agieren.  

Verdi orchestriert grandioses Scheitern als kathartischen Triumph, in dem partikulare Eitelkeiten im universellen Lachen aufgehen.  

Spitzzüngige Ensembles, sprühende Koloraturen und metrische Brillanz kulminieren im Fugenfinale: „Tutto nel mondo è burla“ – humanistische Pointe schlechthin.
