Death Cab For Cutie

The indie rockers Death Cab For Cutie have taken advantage of the Corona break and are back with a brand new album in 2023.

When Death Cab For Cutie wanted to start working on a new album, Corona of course threw a spanner in the works. But because of the pandemic, they could no longer go into the studio together. Especially not, because singer Ben Gibbard, bassist Nick Harmer, drummer Jason McGerr and theband members, guitarists and keyboardists Dave Depper and Zac Rae, lived in five different cities.

So the indie rockers adopted an almost union work model, as Gibbard describes, "Monday through Friday are the five working days, there are five of us in the band. So one guy would work on a track on Monday and pass it on." On each day, everyone had to be done with their part. There was no time to think long, Harmer says: "I always had to contribute something convincing, otherwise the flow would be lost." But because of that, the guys kept developing ideas that might never have happened when they were working together in the studio. Always on Friday, the raw mix of a song was ready.

Not all of them made it onto the tenth record, "Asphalt Meadows," which comes out Sept. 16, but more than half actually came out of that collective process. Death Cab For Cutie refined these demos together with their producer John Congleton until the eleven tracks of the new album were ready. That the sound of the quintet has changed once again should not be a surprise, but that has always been the case with them.

Every album, so the credo goes, must develop its own character - and as many pieces as possible must also ignite on stage. But the eight-time Grammy nominees have always managed to do that in their long career. That's why we can already look forward to Death Cab For Cutie's tour next March.
