Orpheus in the Underworld

Komische Oper Berlin

Bored by her passionless marriage to the dull musician Orpheus, Eurydice prefers to amuse herself with Pluto, the lord of the underworld, and eagerly allows herself to be carried off to the realm of the dead.

Jacques Offenbach
Opéra-bouffon in two acts and four scenes [1858/1874]
Libretto by Ludovic Halévy and Hector Crémieux
A co-production with the Salzburg Festival and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein

Bored by her passionless marriage to the dull musician Orpheus, Eurydice prefers to amuse herself with Pluto, the lord of the underworld, and—quite unlike in the mythological original—allows herself to be carried off to the realm of the dead with enthusiasm. When Jupiter, the king of the heavens, also learns of the beautiful mortal, a witty contest for Eurydice’s favor ensues. In the first major work by the “father of modern operetta,” rousing Parisian dance music meets orchestral finesse, culminating in the world-famous can-can. Offenbach’s mythological parody is brought to life by a top-class, spirited ensemble that, led by narrator Max Hopp, plunges into a vibrantly colorful underworld. With Barrie Kosky’s production, an absolute audience favorite is back on the Komische Oper Berlin’s program.
