Fate or calamitous accident? Leonora meets her lover Alvaro clandestinely. But they are caught by Leonora’s father, who is decidedly opposed to this relationship. To deescalate the situation, Alvaro tosses his weapon aside, but a shot is accidentally discharged and the father dies. The characters find themselves more and more entrapped in a maelstrom of guilt, vengeance, and persecution.

In La forza del destino, Giuseppe Verdi vividly presents existential conflicts and in a musical panorama, setting them against the backdrop of images of society between religious piety and the turmoil of war. The famous overture already combines central motifs of destiny and inner conflict. Expansive arias open psychological abysses, powerful ensembles and choral tableaus drive the sometimes ironic inevitability of events. Philippe Jordan, an established expert on Verdi’s work, will conduct this new production. Vasily Barkhatov will repeatedly return the story to the traumatic event at the start and traces out the psychological lives of the characters from various perspectives.
