    Linie 1

Natalie comes to West Berlin from the provinces and arrives at Zoo station at six-fourteen. She is on her way to meet Johnny, a Berlin rock musician. When she can't find him at the station, she sets off in search of him. She gets on the subway line 1 in the direction of Schlesisches Tor. There she gets caught up in the maelstrom of the city and encounters a panopticon of lost, searching, nagging, but also warm-hearted people, just like those on the Island of the Blessed in 1986.

A musical revue, a drama about life and survival in the big city. A journey back to the time of the Wall City full of hope, courage and self-deception. “Linie 1” reflects how people felt and thought back then. It invites you to laugh, cry and think about others, but above all about yourself. In the process, you also discover a bit of the Berlin of today.

April 30 is always a special date for us at the Grips Theater, because our Linie 1 has been running at the Grips Theater since April 30, 1986, in a celebrated new production for over a year. This year, we are taking the date as an opportunity to present the documentary “Linie 1. Insights into the new production” by Katharina Tress. The videographer filmed director Tim Egloff and his artistic team during the rehearsal period in February and March 2023 and documented the challenges of the new production. Her atmospheric 17-minute documentary shows how the individual theatrical arts of directing, dance and movement, music, costume and set design have to interlock and dovetail with each other to create an evening of theater that is a total work of art.
