What makes an artist an artist, what makes Sky Deep Sky Deep? She is a singer, guitarist, DJ, MC, sound engineer, and producer; she has worked as an actress, brought her own bands to the stage, produced her award-winning queer-indie porn film Enactone, curated festivals and club parties and toured with Peaches. She has lived in New Jersey, NYC, Los Angeles and in Berlin. She developed soundscapes for dance and theater at Ballhaus Naunynstraße and created her own show together with Pisitakun Kuantalaeng here. Where does this versatility come from? This professionalism? And this unique voice in everything she does?

“Are you coming from the East or the West Coast?” “From another Planet.” Perhaps this isn’t an answer, but merely a rejection of the question. And yet it is an answer: here, a third space opens up. Boundaries are inherited, set by others, or imagined by oneself. Sky Deep moves through them, step by step. The family’s musical legacy provides an instrument; her own talent brings the strings to a dangerous and seductive tension. As she moves through, she accumulates experiences and skills – always in search of a life beyond categories, genres, and labels.

In Sweetness From the Bitter String Sky Deep recounts her journey. Accompanied by a guitar and electronics, she tells of influences and encounters, of obstacles and detours. Sweetness From the Bitter String lets us hear how life shapes her sound and how the sound gives her the strength to cross boundaries. Because the sound – it could be from this planet or another.
