Splendor and misery - reading classism in "Ruin and intoxication"

Working group: Museum and inclusion

Who was allowed to enjoy Berlin in the 1920s - and who was not? The exhibition Ruin and Intoxication at the Neue Nationalgalerie shows excess and poverty as two sides of the same modernism: freedom and consumption on the one hand, hard working conditions, unemployment and social misery on the other - visible in works by Käthe Kollwitz, George Grosz, Otto Dix and others.

We take this historical simultaneity of splendor and exclusion as a starting point to examine classism as a contemporary reality in our own museum work. How and where does classist discrimination take place in the museum - in the language of mediation, in the admission prices, in the implicit question "Who is this museum actually made for?"

Input and impulses will come from the kikk collective (klassismus ist keine kunstepoche), a Berlin education and empowerment collective that works critically of power and domination as well as intersectionally on class and classism. Afterwards, we will explore the exhibition together and sharpen our awareness of classist mechanisms in everyday museum life.

kikk - klassismus ist keine kunstepoche sees itself as an educational collective with an emancipatory understanding of education and aspirations. Our thematic focus is on class and (anti-)classism, i.e. oppression and discrimination based on social origin or position. We tie in with social discourses on social inequality and educational injustice in capitalist societies. With our offers ranging from introductory and in-depth workshops and multiplier seminars to lectures, advice and classism-sensitive mediation, we are an actor in extracurricular youth and adult education. Our offers are intended to be an impulse for empowerment for those negatively affected by classism and to sensitize those not affected. Our methodically creative and participatory educational formats are action- and process-oriented, are adapted to the needs of the target group and work with biographical experiences, emotions and opportunities for self-reflection.

Friederike Kawlath is a freelance lecturer in adult education. As a trainer in the educational collective kikk - klassismus ist keine Kunstepoche, she conducts discrimination-sensitive educational formats and consultations on the subject of class society and classism.

The Museum and Inclusion working group brings together experts from the fields of museums and inclusion. The aim is to learn from each other, establish contacts and try out practical things together. Together we will discuss inclusive educational work in museums.
