Protecting Native Orchids—Insights into Research and Practice

Multimedia Presentation

Max Fussan

Max Fussan

Max Fussan, a conservation geneticist at the Botanical Advisory Service at the Botanical

Garden in Berlin will offer insights into his work with a multimedia presentation:

They’re not just beautiful to look at. Orchids are fascinating plants with a lot to tell. What actually makes them so special? What native orchids can be found in Berlin and the surrounding area? And how can we better protect them? Conservation geneticist Max Fussan, a member of the team at the Botanical Advisory Center at the BO, will provide answers to these questions.

His research focuses on the broad-leaved orchid (Dactylorhiza majalis), an orchid species still occasionally found in undisturbed wet meadows. He uses genome size measurements and state-of-the-art methods of molecular genetics to more precisely define the species’ boundaries. In addition, Fussan monitors the development of orchid populations in the wild to develop science-based recommendations for their conservation. He provides insights into his work with numerous photos.

The lectures are part of the accompanying program for the 2026 Orchid Show at the Botanical Garden. They are open to the public at the visitor center on Königin-Luise-Platz—no registration is required. Please note that seating is limited.

Max Fussan’s research is supported by the Zwillenberg-Tietz Foundation.
