“Politics of Heartbreak” comprises three evenings at the “Vessel of Love”, combining lectures and discussions with performative interventions and music. Internationally active writers, journalists, activists and artists working on political affects, the experience of being a stranger, authoritarianism and racism, as well as feminist, anti-colonial and diasporic movements,come together at HAU1 to discuss the political dimensions of our of our present-day heartbreak.The festival’s questions around of resilience and collective care are enriched by international experiences from Afghanistan, Kurdistan, Palestine, Iran and Turkey, while being brought into the context of Berlin.The discussions are framed and expanded by music and performances, which convey in an aesthetic way what words cannot express, allowing us to feel and share in the heartbreak of others. Blurring the lines between political analysis, performance and a choral singing, the central question of “Love is a Verb” unfolds: How does heartbreak transform from a private emotion into a political condition that connects us all? Opening: SEYYARE Anatolian Women’s ChoirThe SEYYARE Anatolian Women’s Choir emerged from a spontaneous moment of communal singing at a funeral and was founded by women with experiences of migration and exile. A shared experience of loss thus became a collective sound – and a space in which experiences of otherness and belonging can be renegotiated.Keynote: Ece TemelkuranFrom the experience of singing together, the evening move towards a political and personal reflection on loss and alienation. The lawyer, writer and journalist Ece Temelkuran understands the anatomy of authoritarianism – and the heartbreak that remains when a country becomes becomes foreign to you.d. After years of critical reporting on the Erdoğan government and Kurdistan, she left Turkey in 2016. In her book “How to Lose a Country: The 7 Steps from Democracy to Dictatorship” (2019), she dissects how democracies gradually unravel; in “ Nation of Strangers: Rebuilding Home in the 21st Century.” (2026), a deeply personal yet political view of the world, she finds – in letters to strangers – potentially to all of us – a literary language in which the loss of belonging can be shared and new connections emerge from a shared sense of estrangement.Spoken Word Performance: “A SPACE OF DIS/APPEARANCE” by parallelgesellschaft (Armeghan Taheri & Ken Yamamoto)Drawing on Mahmoud Darwish’s poem “Think of the Others” and Hannah Arendt’s philosophy of plurality, Armeghan Taheri approaches freedom as a fragile body – caught between political frontlines, media overload and the limits of what can be said. Language thus becomes a material that offers resistance under pressure. Ken Yamamoto’s soundscape of drones, noise and fragmented sampling picks up on this tension without smoothing it over, placing disruptions at the centre. The result is an open, unguarded performance in which the political risks of language become palpable. parallelgesellschaft is a post-German, intersectional artists’ collective that has been working since 2017 at the intersection of critical literary formats, curatorial practice and political-poetic intervention.Tatreez Berlin will be on site throughout the evening and invites visitors to work together on traditional Palestinian embroidery patterns. The initiative is dedicated to passing on the art of Palestinian embroidery, through which cultural knowledge, memory and a sense of belonging are preserved across generations. Politics of Heartbreak #2 Mourning as ResistanceWhose death counts, and whose resistance is seen? Activists, artists and writers from Iran, Palestine and Afghanistan speak about bodies claimed by the state, by the map, by war – and about what it means to become invisible once again amidst escalating geopolitical tensions. An interactive performance centred on a burial ritual and a subsequent discussion explore visibility, disappearance and resistance as forms of mourning amidst political violence, the destruction of war and ecocide.Performance: Rebel-IST-hah! Collective / Azadeh Ganjeh “Not a Body for Burial”On 19 July 2021, the performance artist, scholar, dramaturg and activist Azadeh Ganjeh (Rebel-Ist-hah! Collective) came across an Instagram video: in it, an Iranian woman can be seen and heard protesting – yet it remains unclear who she is or what becomes of her. In her lecture-performance “Not a Body for Burial”, Ganjeh takes this video as the starting point for a collective quest: Who is seen, who is heard? And who belongs to the “we” that is watching?Her research leads to bodies which, as Ganjeh puts it, “belong to the state, the map, the war museum” – people whose stories are rendered invisible, whose lives vanish into statistics. By making one person, her story and her background visible, Ganjeh restores a measure of agency to her and reminds us that behind the statistics of people who suffer and die in the struggle for their rights, there is always an individual life. The research is followed by a traditional funeral dance: a mourning for people whose bodies are no longer there to be buried. Discussion: Azadeh Ganjeh, Simin Jawabreh and Kubra KhademiAfterwards, a discussion will explore this question of visibility and being heard further: What happens to feminist and progressive resistance when it is once again rendered invisible and subjected to political violence, caught between autocratic repression from within and the imperial logic of war from without? Azadeh Ganjeh, Simin Jawabreh and Kubra Khademi speak across Iran, Palestine and Afghanistan – about resistance as a form of mourning.
