Plaza. A participative performance by Li Binyuan

Part of Family Matters

Li Binyuan und seine Mutter – Li Binyuan und seine Mutter

Li Binyuan und seine Mutter – Li Binyuan und seine Mutter

Whistling, clapping, invented sounds, rhythms, code words – what does connectedness sound like? How - do we recognise those who are closest to us?

This is a participatory performance.

Artist Li Binyuan invites families, friends and other groups of connected individuals to take part in a unique ritual: for 30-45 minutes at a time, participants enter a shared “square,” put on blindfolds, and navigate toward one another solely through the sounds they share—those intuitive calls exchanged only with someone who has held you, challenged you, or made you feel you belonged. These ties form the inner maps we carry, which continue to shape how we meet each other now.

Together we transform the Foyer of the Humboldt Forum into a temporary Plaza: a place where private memories surface in public, where accents become a kind of kinship, and where the quiet act of listening forms a counterweight to the visual noise of the present.

We are looking for participants:

Two members per family/group

Willingness to be blindfolded and communicate only through personal sounds

All backgrounds, generations, languages, and relationships are welcome. Plaza celebrates diversity in sound, identity, and kinship.

Plaza is a quiet revolution – a celebration of how deeply we know each other, even without seeing. Join us in creating a living map of sound, care, and connection.
