P14: Schwule Nonnen im Kloster

P14, Volksbühne’s youth theatre, provides a platform for young people to explore their own issues. They jointly take the decision what to bring to the stage and in what form. In “Schwule Nonnen im Kloster”, Antoni Zawol asks how faith, family, and queer identity interact, and what happens when a place of repression turns out as a safe space. After outing themselves to their parents, six teenagers are promptly sent to a convent for a radical one-week conversion programme.  Much to their surprise, however, the convent is just a front for a safe haven, run by a drag Mother Superior committed to protect queer young people. During their week-long stay, the teens are trying to come to terms with their queer identities and their relationship with religion and family, as they learn to accept themselves.
Schwule Nonnen im Kloster is Antoni’s directorial debut. Together with Amadou, who have been performing with P14 for some time and just graduated from school, they talk about how they came to join P14.What do you guys do when you’re not doing theatre?Antek: I just graduated from school, now I’m trying to figure out my path in life. I like to sing – right now I’m training in classical singing, but I also sing in a rock band.Amadou: I love dancing. Why do you want to do theatre?Antek: Theatre has been a huge passion since I was a child. I just love being surrounded by creative and talented people.Amadou: I like doing theatre because it gives me the courage to be a different person, to see myself and the people around me from new perspectives. Theatre is the only place where I feel I have a strong voice.Antek, the title of the play translates as Queer Nuns in the Convent. How did the idea come about, and does it reflect any of your own experiences?Antek: I got the idea when I attended a P14 play and the stage design conjured up an image in my mind of a nun in a glittering habit. Everything else developed from there. For me, the play is a self-reflective and personal exploration of queer identities and experiences.Amadou: I’ll be developing the choreography and hope to leave traces of my artistic language – dance – in the piece to enhance the narrative.P14 is the youth theatre of the Volksbühne at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. Young theatre makers have been calling the shots here for over 30 years. To join P14, please send an email to .
