This evening, the memorial will open the exhibition “Detention by the State Security Service—100 Portraits of Former Political Prisoners of the GDR’s State Security Service” by photographer André Wagenzik, who has captured portraits of one hundred former political prisoners of the GDR. The photographs give a face to people who were persecuted because of their desire for freedom and their political convictions, and serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law.
Frank Ebert, Berlin’s Commissioner for Coming to Terms with the SED Dictatorship, will speak at the opening. Following the opening, Birgit Schlicke and Mario Röllig, together with photographer André Wagenzik, will discuss their experiences and the development of the project in a conversation with eyewitnesses. Jessica Steckel from the Coordinating Office for Eyewitnesses will moderate the event.
Afterward, the memorial will host a small reception.Translated with DeepL
