Loneliness and Agency in Digital Spaces
Digital communication promises closeness – yet simultaneously creates distance and isolation. Platforms structure interactions and attention according to their own logic and shape how we think, feel, and relate to one another. “Loneliness and Agency in Digital Spaces” brings together the artists aaajiao and Kamila Narysheva with curator Han-Fang Wang. In a talk, they shed light on artistic strategies for engaging with digital communication systems and explore the emotional and social conditions of post-digital coexistence. In a discussion, they examine how loneliness arises in networked spaces, how agency can be regained, and where moments of genuine connection still become possible.Aaajiao’s video work “Minority Algorithm” examines social media as a central medium of information in war. The focus is on how the isolated confrontation with violent and AI-generated images influences our perceptions and our sense of place in the world. In “Prometheus Brought Fire”, Kamila Narysheva shows how a chat conversation between two people is constantly interrupted by a bot with disruptive content. The work condenses the experience of fragmented online communication and raises questions about isolation and the breakdown of authentic exchange. Han-Fang Wang presents “Boom! Equal Access,” a project about older people in Taiwan that explores opportunities for digital participation. The focus is on developing accessible strategies to promote digital literacy and counteract loneliness and isolation.
