Karl-Marx-Allee

Architectural tour

Explore one of Berlin’s most impressive urban ensembles and experience how architecture was used to shape everyday life in the GDR.

Karl-Marx-Allee is one of East Berlin’s most significant urban boulevards and a landmark of socialist urban planning. Stretching between Frankfurter Tor and Alexanderplatz, its wide avenues, monumental residential blocks, public buildings and generous open spaces create a cohesive architectural ensemble. The repetitive façades and carefully ordered streetscape express the GDR’s representative ambitions and continue to define the character of the district today.
