On 17 May, we are celebrating International Museum Day. In the heart of the Nikolaiviertel, we invite you to visit our exhibition – admission is free.
Discover eight hundred years of history and culture! Berlin’s oldest surviving church building has shaped the Nikolaiviertel and the centre of Berlin since the Middle Ages: once a place of worship, now a museum of church, architectural and urban history. Of particular interest to families is the model of the medieval twin cities of Berlin and Cölln. Here, children and adults can explore together which buildings from that era still exist and what they look like today.
An audio guide for families takes you through the museum with fascinating stories in German. Especially for children, there is a museum treasure hunt illustrated by the Berlin comic artist Mawil, available in German, English, Turkish, Polish and Arabic.
The two new exhibition projects, „Arguing over Stones?! “ and „Who Was in Charge in the City?„, are interventions within the permanent exhibition at the Nikolaikirche Museum. In different ways, they explore the question: what does it mean to exhibit history in a building that itself embodies so much history?
Info: International Museum Day will take place for the 49th time in 2026. Annually designated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) to fall on 18 May, it will be celebrated in Germany this year on the third Sunday of the month. The aim of this event is to raise awareness of museums and encourage people to discover their diversity.
