An autograph session gets out of hand. A former 1980s television hero sits on stage, waiting for his fans. Memories come flooding back. Who wouldn’t want to be close to their childhood idol once more? Perhaps even manage to get an autograph? With consummate ease, he delivers what is expected of him: legendary catchphrases, unforgettable gestures and anecdotes from a time when TV series were the talk of the town in school playgrounds and offices the very next morning. Back then, people believed in a clear moral compass that could solve any problem. Longings glowed in neon and promised imminent fulfilment.

But suddenly the situation takes a turn. The harmless nostalgia show turns into an evening that is as funny as it is unsettling. The hero of yesteryear surprises us with a sharp insight into our times. Whereas the villains used to be easy to spot, today they have become invisible. He talks about loneliness and violence, global markets and the hidden mechanisms of our prosperity.

In HAPPY LOOKING FOR FREEDOM, Lydia Ziemke and her Berlin-based collective suite42 combine pop culture, offbeat humour and social analysis to create a surprising, clever and resonant evening of theatre. What begins as a journey into the past ends in an absurd and moving confrontation with our present – and with the realisation that a shared future begins where people find their way back to one another.

A collaboration between suite42, the euro-scene Festival Leipzig, the MONODRAMA Festival Luxembourg and the tak Theater Aufbau Kreuzberg. The premiere takes place on 4 November at the euro-scene Festival in the Westflügel, Leipzig.
