Under King Frederick William IV, the almost 23-metre-high Norman Tower, modeled on a medieval watchtower, was built in 1846. It enriched the landscape scenery of the Ruinenberg, which had already been lavishly staged by Frederick the Great: a water basin, created to feed the fountains in Sanssouci Park, surrounded by an elaborate arrangement of colossal columns, a Doric round temple, a pyramid and a wall of ruins modeled on ancient theaters.
