The String Archestra & Rothko String Quartet

The String Archestra supports people of color in classical music and honors composers who have been overlooked in music history due to their ethnic background. Together with the Rothko String Quartet, they present a program that draws on a rich musical heritage spanning three centuries and four continents. From a string quartet by the French-Senegalese composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745–1799) to “Normadic Nirvana” by the South African composer Monthati Masebe, born in 1996. With the combined energy of both ensembles, “The Holy Presence Of Joan D’Arc” will be performed—Julius Eastman’s haunting homage to the medieval heroine and queer icon. In our series “Berlin – Music of the City at the Konzerthaus,” musicians and ensembles from Berlin come together to experimentally blend classical Western music from various centuries with styles that all call this city home—from voguing to strings and synthesizers to jazz. Berlin Tracks aims to inspire, connect communities, and invite audiences to follow the diverse musical threads that together make up the soundtrack of our city.
