In her new book, Julia Franck traces the story of an extraordinary relationship. Baladine Klossowska and Rainer Maria Rilke met in Paris during the prewar years. At the time, she was married to the painter Erich Klossowski and a student of Pierre Bonnard; Rilke worked for a time as Auguste Rodin’s secretary. World War I forced Klossowska to leave France. After her divorce, she lived in Switzerland with her two sons starting in 1917. In August 1920, she met Rilke again in Geneva—and became “Mouky” to him.

But Julia Franck doesn't just tell the story of a great love. She portrays a woman who was long overshadowed by her image as a muse and who fought to find her own artistic voice.
