What do personal photographs reveal about upheaval and change? In “Before What Came After”, international female artists based in Berlin share images from their archives and weave together personal stories of migration and the diaspora. Through an improvised performance, a collective perspective emerges on the past, present and future – and on the possibilities for everyday resistance.In “Before What Came After”, artist Vlatka Horvat brings together a group of international female artists based in Berlin for an improvised durational performance. All of Horvat’s guests have experienced some form of breakdown, upheaval or instability. Their photographs – depicting everyday objects, scenes and places—become starting points for personal narratives, observations and speculation. As these stories unfold, diverse yet interconnected experiences of immigration and diaspora come into dialogue with one another. The performance considers personal image archives as traces of social change, and asks how, beyond loss, destruction and erasure, they might reveal forms and possibilities of everyday resistance.
