Der Film erzählt die Geschichte um die Rückgabe von den Nazi-Raubkunst. Im Mittelpunkt steht Gustav Klimts berühmtes Porträt der Adele Bloch-Bauer, das ihr Mann, der Wiener Industrielle Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, 1907 in Auftrag gegeben und gekauft hatte. Nach Jahren dramatischer juristischer Kämpfe wurde die »Goldene Adele« 2006 an Maria Altmann, die damals 89-jährige Nichte Adeles, gespielt von Helen Mirren, zurückgegeben.
