The three members of Twin Talk have been crucial figures on Chicago’s jazz scene for well over a decade, but despite making a handful of increasingly sophisticated recordings over that time, this performance at Jazzfest Berlin marks the trio’s long overdue European debut. On Twin Talk Live, a seductive 2024 album that was actually recorded in a studio, the group reinforces a dazzling rapport, subverting saxophone trio conventions with a highly interactive practice where each musician shares frontline and support roles at all times. The music is built around indelible melodies that unfold with astonishing patience and care, and the improvisations are sculpted with meticulous detail and a sense of proportion.

Tenor saxophonist Dustin Laurenzi and bassist Katie Ernst have worked in indie rock contexts in recent years, the former touring with singer Bill Callahan while the latter has played extensively in Iron & Wine, but when they play as Twin Talk with drummer Andrew Green, they reveal deep jazz bona fides. Here and there Ernst injects wordless singing that’s just as precise and nuanced as her bass playing, and while the effortlessly buoyant music definitely possesses a pop veneer à la early Bad Plus, close listening reveals a surfeit of nifty details. Each musician is assigned an integral part, all of which lock together, but their execution is marked by a quiet freedom. The formal elegance is no impediment to inspired improvisation, effective accents and displacements, and role-switching.
