Led by Iranian clarinetist Shabnam Parvaresh, Sheen Trio offers a sonic reflection of a world in crisis and transformation, creating music that veers from lyrical contemplation to bruising, angular exploration. Parvaresh grew up in Iran, studying classical music and later playing clarinet in the Tehran Symphony Orchestra. In 2014 – exhausted by the political oppression of her homeland and hungry to learn about jazz – she moved to Germany, studying at the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, the town where she’s resided ever since. In addition to playing music, she also curates it, and she recently became the artistic director of the prestigious genre-spanning Morgenland Festival Osnabrück, which programmes a wide array of global music with a focus on what disparate traditions share rather than presenting music as a collection of oddities. That holistic outlook is something she brings to Sheen Trio, which features electric guitarist Ula Martyn-Ellis and drummer Philipp Buck.

This past spring the group released its second album, Transitory, a title which effectively captures the clarinetist’s own biography, as a human between shifting realities, whether geographic or musical. There are tunes distinguished by visceral tumult, with drummer Buck producing a wild ruckus while holding fast to an insistent pulse as guitarist Martyn-Ellis helps connect the dots between hard rock and fusion. Other pieces transmit a pensive serenity, calm but shot through with an undercurrent of tension. Parvaresh’s groaning bass clarinet, sometimes tonally expanded through effects pedals, will occasionally lay down bass patterns, but all three musicians share roles, unspooling melodies or helping to thicken the rhythmic attack.
