*Katyń* is a deeply personal late-career work by Andrzej Wajda (1926–2016). In this film, he addresses a trauma in Polish history that affected him personally. Wajda’s father, Jakub, an officer in the Polish Army, was abducted and shot by the Soviet secret police in 1939. It was only after the end of the communist regime that it became possible to commemorate the Katyń massacre in Poland and to make it the subject of a feature film.
