On two weekends in August, the Schlüterhof becomes a meeting place for film enthusiasts from all over the world – with summery drinks and snacks. The open-air festival presents six current cinema productions that are box office hits in their countries of origin but have not yet been shown on the big screen in Germany. Before the screenings, we invite you to thematic spotlights to get you in the mood – with prominent guests!

Over two weekends in August, the Box Office Around the World festival presents six current cinema productions that are audience successes and box office hits in their countries of origin, but have not yet been seen on the big screen in Germany.

Together with representatives of the Berlin communities from Thailand, Argentina, Nigeria, Vietnam, Brazil and India and the curator Dorothee Wenner, the films were selected and an accompanying programme developed. Before the open-air screenings, a thematic spotlight – with a star-studded line-up – will be directed at each film.

Toun is a woman of firm conviction, a church usher married with four children. Toun always knows best, is always right, and keeps everyone on their toes with the tasks she assigns! Her ‘know-it-all‘ archetype is not only at home, but also at church, and with friends and family. However, her facade begins to falter at a wedding of all places, causing massive chaos in the huge family… Oversabi Aunty is a fast-paced, dramatic comedy about Toun a Yoruba woman married to an Igbo man, living together under one roof in present-day Lagos. Can you imagine the chaos, or not?

Toyin Abraham serves as the film’s lead actress, director, producer, and screenwriter all in one: perhaps the combination of all these roles were necessary to bring to life such a powerful and deeply moving dramedy that strips away the masks of religious hypocrisy to expose a family wrestling with the fine line between faith and blind fanaticism.

Nigerian audiences have rewarded Toyin Abraham’s courage in making a film which is as entertaining as it is dramatic about tribalism and generational conflicts in modern-day Lagos. Oversabi Aunty was a huge box-office success across generations and ethnic communities in Nigeria and West Africa.

Toyin Abraham is an award-winning Nigerian actress, filmmaker, and producer renowned for her contributions to Nollywood and her consistent box-office success. In Oversabi Aunty, she serves as the writer, director, producer, and lead actress, portraying Toun, a well-meaning but overly intrusive woman whose actions disrupt her family and community. The film marks Abraham’s directorial debut and showcases her ability to blend comedy with meaningful social commentary. Oversabi Aunty achieved remarkable commercial success, surpassing 1 billion Naira at the West African box office and becoming the first Nollywood directorial debut to reach this milestone.
