Over two weekends in August, the Box Office Around the World festival presents six current cinema productions that are audience successes and box office hits in their countries of origin, but have not yet been seen on the big screen in Germany.

Together with representatives of the Berlin communities from Thailand, Argentina, Nigeria, Vietnam, Brazil and India and the curator Dorothee Wenner, the films were selected and an accompanying programme developed. Before the open-air screenings, a thematic spotlight – with a star-studded line-up – will be directed at each film.

Javier Chocobar’s killer was carrying a camera as well as a pistol when he killed the member of the indigenous Chuschagasta community and seriously injured two other men in October 2009. The video was shown on YouTube – and nine years later in the courtroom. That is how long the trial against the killers – a wealthy landowner and his accomplices, two former police officers – was delayed.

In her documentary, Lucrecia Martel embarks on a journey through time to the colonial roots of the crime and ends up in the present day. Together with her co-writer María Alché, they undertook a meticulous research in the province of Tucumán in north-western Argentina, 1500 kilometres from Buenos Aires. The film documents the consequences of the murder on the community, with Chocobar’s widow often at the centre of attention. The team films in the courtroom, studies files and private photo albums, whilst in the background they forge alliances with human rights organisations. Martel, who has achieved international fame with her feature films, says about her first feature documentary: “Documentary is a very difficult genre because it claims to have a greater connection to reality than fiction. It seeks the truth. Something impossible when dealing with the official history of a country, which is a fiction of monumental proportions.”

Martel tackles the ‘impossible’ with cinematic mastery, offering a close-up view of the insidious mechanisms of power at work against the indigenous population. The result is a highly topical thriller that is currently causing a huge stir, and not just in Argentina.
