Two systems, five cities, five images. Different ideologies and time periods. CLOSE UP MARX is a cinematic examination of the ideas of the founding father of political economy that have coagulated into a monument. With current reference, the film wanders between Trier and Chemnitz in the footsteps of the Marx monuments, relates found footage to conversations on location and analyzes the myth and projection surface that surround the figure of Marx. The film explores the stories behind the creation of the monuments and the social situation at the time when these stories unfolded. YouTube clips, DEFA films and news snippets show the Marx monuments at the moment they were erected, dismantled and rebuilt. Conversations with contemporary witnesses transport the audience into a stage space in which the various monuments have gathered as flat cardboard walls for a group picture.

The monument, reserved for kings and the aristocracy in the 19th century, has captured the pioneer of value criticism in the 20th and 21st centuries. Karl Marx cannot be viewed in any other way than in contradictions. CLOSE UP MARX explores these contradictions in close-ups, with open interest and without judgment.
