The Syrian author Munir (Georges Khabbaz) has fled to Germany. After being granted asylum, he can no longer return to his home country. Munir retreats to a remote island in northern Germany to make an important decision. In the quiet seclusion of his new refuge, he meets Valeska (Hanna Schygulla) and her rough but loyal son Karl.
