In the fall, they regularly attract curious glances at the Botanical Garden: the large, light-green fruits of the Osage orange (Maclura pomifera), which roll into the grass among the trees. What kind of plant is this—and what stories does it hold?
This tree, which is rare in Europe, is native to North America. Its history is closely tied to the colonization of the United States—and is largely unknown here.
In this workshop, we’ll explore the Osage orange from different perspectives and bring various forms of knowledge into dialogue with one another: botanical research, artistic practice, and our own personal experiences of nature. We’ll explore the tree with all our senses, hear stories about it, and finally get creative ourselves—using the intense orange color of its bark.
The workshop will take place as part of the exhibition “Osage Orange. Antje Majewski and Jen Tiger” at the Gutshaus Steglitz.
