During the division of Berlin, the Glienicke Bridge and the Potsdam district of Klein-Glienicke were central places where East and West met. as an exclave on the territory of West Berlin, Klein-Gliencke formed a strictly guarded "special security zone" in the GDR. The eventful history of the Glienicke Bridge is reflected in its frequent name changes, which went hand in hand with the change of state systems. The Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge became the Bridge of Unity and this in turn became the Glienicke Bridge. During the Cold War, the bridge gained the nickname "Agents' Bridge" mainly due to the three exchanges of Western and Eastern spies.
