We cordially invite you to a discussion accompanying the exhibition with Liebermann expert Margreet Nouwen. To complement the current exhibition “IN FOCUS. Liebermann’s Pastels. A World in Chalk,” Margreet Nouwen (Max Liebermann Archive, Berlin) and Viktoria Bernadette Krieger (Head of Exhibitions and Collections, Liebermann Villa) will discuss Liebermann’s pastel technique.

Using individual pastels—which remain popular collector’s items to this day—they will discuss the distinctive features of pastel art and explore questions regarding Liebermann’s preferred motifs. The discussion will also cover the significant influence that drawing with pastels had on the artist and his further development, as well as the conservation requirements necessary to preserve his works on paper for as long as possible.

About the Guest:
Dr. Margreet Nouwen studied art history and archaeology at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. Since 1993, she has been conducting research on the life and work of Max Liebermann, initially for the catalog raisonné of his paintings and oil studies (approximately 1,600 oil paintings, which her late husband, Prof. Dr. Matthias Eberle, published in two volumes in 1995/96) and later for the catalog raisonné of pastels, watercolors, and gouaches. She also handles inquiries regarding unique works on paper as well as the paintings and, provided she deems them authentic, prepares expert reports on them.

To set the mood for the discussion, we invite you to visit the exhibition “IN FOCUS: Liebermann’s Pastels—A World in Chalk” before the event begins, until 7:00 p.m., during extended opening hours.

Following the discussion, we look forward to rounding out the evening together with stimulating conversation over a glass of wine or water.
