Once a month, the Berlinische Galerie hosts “Speaking of Video Art”, an exchange in a small group about the current programme of the IBB Video Space. This series of events addresses all those interested in discussing films or socio-political questions in the arts and getting to know various artists and authors. Together, we watch selected videos and read short excerpts from essays, theory, fiction or poems in English or German that are connected to the works in terms of content or form. The following discussion leaves room to explore both the discursive threads of the video works as well as perspectives and questions raised by the group.

Based on the film “Aralkum” by Daniel Asadi Faezi and Mila Zhluktenko, in July we will read excerpts from texts by cultural theorist Mark Fisher on the concept of ‘hauntology’, an extract from the essay “The Great Derangement” by the writer Amitav Ghosh, and passages from “Where Does The Myth Dwell?” by the anthropologist Anastasia Galimova. The film “Aralkum” deals with the consequences of the dehydration of the Aral Sea. The lake, situated between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, was once the fourth-largest in the world. As a result of human destruction, it is now a barren desert landscape. The texts examine how unregulated exploitation of resources has led and continues to lead to the long-term destruction of habitats, making the prospect of a better future seem almost impossible. How can people live in devastated landscapes? And what new images and narratives do we need in the arts to enable us to imagine a future life amidst the consequences of the climate catastrophe?

Since 2011, the IBB Video Space has been presenting artists who work with time-based media. The programme features works that explore media-related, political and social issues. Particular emphasis is given to marginalised perspectives and to highlighting the impact of power structures.

The series of events is hosted by Louisa Engel, curatorial trainee for education and outreach. The sessions can be attended independently of one another. No preparation is required to take part. Whether you wish to participate actively in the discussion or simply listen, both are equally welcome.

Language: The event will be held in German and English.
