Searching for Traces of the Colonial Era

Public Tour I Oct. 15, 2026

Curare, rubber, stevia

Botanical gardens thrive on the biodiversity of the world’s flora. Plants that have traveled great distances have found a home in the greenhouses. How is it that botanical gardens in the Northern Hemisphere house such a large collection of plants from the tropics? What does this have to do with colonialism? And what role does indigenous knowledge play in the use of these plants?

This guided tour sheds light on plant collection past and present, showing how plants and the associated indigenous knowledge regarding their use came to Europe—and how Indigenous peoples still do not benefit from sharing their knowledge to this day.
