Public guided tour "Imprisoned at Alexanderplatz"

Between 1951 and 1990, the Berlin-Mitte remand prison, or UHA II, was located in Keibelstraße on Alexanderplatz in the GDR. It was subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior and was located within the East Berlin Presidium of the People's Police. People were detained in the remand prison on various charges and awaited the outcome of investigations and court proceedings. The "Keibelstraße" is a symbol of state repression and arbitrariness, which illustrates ideas of political opposition and social deviance, but also of "ordinary" criminality in a dictatorship.

The guided tour of the former remand prison focuses on the history of the site, the fates of the prisoners and the conditions under which they were imprisoned in Keibelstraße. Another focus is on the structural changes. From 1990 onwards, film and music producers used the lower floors of the former prison as a backdrop and redesigned parts of the prison hall according to their own ideas.

The tour lasts approx. 45 minutes. Afterwards, you will have time to explore the site on your own. The meeting point is at 11:55 am in front of the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family at Bernhard-Weiß-Straße 6, 10178 Berlin. Please be on time, as later admission is not possible. If you require barrier-free access, please let us know in advance.
