The Spandau Citadel is really something special. Built between 1557 and 1594 by the Italian architect Francesco Chiaramella de Gandino and the Italian master fortress builder, Count Rochus Guerini zu Lynar, among others, the citadel was used for military purposes until 1945. Accompany us through the time of the fortress construction, Napoleon Bonaparte's visit, the events of the Wars of Liberation and the storage of the Imperial War Treasure between 1874 and 1919.
The casemates of the citadel form one of the largest winter habitats for bats in Europe. For this reason, they are only accessible to visitors for three months of the year. The vaulted corridors with their thick walls were originally built for defensive purposes. When visiting the casemates of the Bastion König, you will not only explore one of the oldest parts of the citadel, which is largely preserved in its original state, but also a cinematically interesting location, including where Edgar Wallace's The Witcher was filmed in 1964.
