This evening, the Museum Nikolaikirche is all about Paul Gerhardt. The famous Baroque songwriter worked as a pastor at the church from 1657-1668. In collaboration with the cantors Johann Crüger and his successor Johann Georg Ebeling, he created hymns that are still sung around the world today. Now the winners of the Paul Gerhardt Melody Competition of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) are being honored.
Around 500 entries were received for the competition. A five-member jury chaired by Prof. Konrad Klek, President of the Paul Gerhardt Society, selected the prize-winning entries. The event will take place on the 350th anniversary of the death of Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676). The Berlin State and Cathedral Choir under the direction of Prof. Kai-Uwe Jirka will sing Paul Gerhardt songs to old and new melodies.
