Open Monument Day

On the Trail of a Secret Police Force

For nearly four decades, the Ministry for State Security of the GDR organized the surveillance and persecution of people from its headquarters in Lichtenberg. With its distinctive buildings and open spaces, this historic site documents the Stasi’s gradual evolution into one of the world’s largest state surveillance and repression apparatuses. Since 2022, additional areas of the former headquarters have been designated as historic landmarks. Even 36 years after the Stasi was dissolved, the site and its buildings have not yet fully found their place in Berlin’s urban landscape.

On Open Monument Day, representatives of the “Stasi Headquarters: Campus for Democracy” invite visitors to explore the site.
