Open Lab Evening: Recycling, Repackaged

How AI Brings Visions of the Future for Packaging to Life

Imagine an AI that translates human thoughts and feelings into visions of the future: Take a look at how we’ll shop, package, and recycle in the future. In this workshop, we’ll explore these visions together and ask: What kind of future for packaging do we actually want?

In this workshop, we’ll showcase AI-generated visions of the future centered on packaging—and compare them with one another. You’ll also learn what self-separating packaging is and how it can make our daily lives easier. Building on this, we’ll discuss together: What ideas can help us shape the future of recycling in the best possible way? And what role do people play in this?

Our future is shaped by visions—yet today’s flood of packaging overwhelms both us and the environment. In the workshop, we’ll show how the “Prompting Visions” project (Fraunhofer UMSICHT) has transformed individual thoughts and feelings about packaging into striking visions of the future. Together, we’ll explore how new technologies can not only change the way we communicate but also make significant strides in recycling.

What is an Open Lab evening?

Every Thursday, things get creative at the Lab. You’ll learn methods like Design Thinking and Future Storytelling, try out 3D printers and laser cutters, and get a behind-the-scenes look at the Lab’s projects. There’s something new every week.

Workshop Leader

The workshop is led by Sophie Kramer from Fraunhofer UMSICHT. A trained product designer, she works in the User-Centered Technology research group, focusing on the circular economy and consumer acceptance. In addition to physical product and packaging development, she focuses on digital touchpoints that can facilitate additional information sharing and interactions.

The “Prompting Visions” project was funded through the Fraunhofer network “Science, Art, and Design.” The Fraunhofer Society is a partner of Futurium
