Open Lab Evening: Pathways to Robotics

What exactly are robots? Machines that take on tasks for us? Smart helpers in our daily lives? Or systems with which we’ll work more and more closely in the future? During this Open Lab evening, you’ll get to the bottom of these questions. You’ll discover current examples from research and real-world applications, learn why people develop robots, and try out for yourself how robotics works.

 

Together, you’ll take a look at where robots are already being used today, what problems they’re designed to solve, and what ideas researchers are developing for the future. It’s not just about technology, but also about our relationship with machines: What should robots be capable of? What tasks would we like to entrust to them? And what might effective collaboration between humans and machines look like?

In the hands-on portion, you’ll get active yourselves: Using Dash robots—which can be controlled and programmed via an app—you’ll tackle creative challenges. This way, you’ll experience firsthand how you can build complex sequences using simple commands. No prior knowledge is required—just curiosity, a willingness to experiment, and a love of discovering things together.

 

What is an Open Lab evening?

Every Thursday, things get creative at the Lab. You’ll learn about methods like Design Thinking and Future Storytelling, try out 3D printers, laser cutters, and robots, and get a behind-the-scenes look at the Lab’s projects. There’s something new every week.

We would like to thank the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA (Stuttgart) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Large-Scale Structures in Production Engineering IGP (Rostock) for their support and guidance in selecting technically appropriate materials that provide insights into the current state of research through photo and video contributions.

 

Workshop Facilitator

Junge Tüftler*innen is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering people to actively and sustainably shape the world using digital tools. Since 2016, the Junge Tüftler*innen team has grown into a diverse group of experts from the fields of education, design, computer science, music, and, of course, making and coding, among many others. This diversity enables them to develop innovative formats and content and bring them to life.

The Education Innovation Lab is a “think & do tank” dedicated to fundamentally transforming our education systems. To this end, they work closely with experts, teachers, and students to create learning environments that foster critical thinking and the active shaping of a sustainable future.
