Today, Max Liebermann (1847-1935) is considered one of the most important representatives of Impressionism in Germany and a pioneer of modernism. What is less well known is that he was also an influential cultural politician and accomplished networker who shaped the German cultural landscape for decades. But how did Liebermann manage to hold on to the highest cultural-political office of the presidency of the Academy in a highly politically turbulent time?
From the founding of the Berlin Secession to his many years in office at the Prussian Academy of Arts, he shaped the art scene: Liebermann's path shows how artistic vision and institutional power interacted - and the personal and political challenges Liebermann was confronted with.
The talk accompanying the exhibition Alles für die Kunst! sheds light on these decisive stages of his career. We are delighted to welcome two experts:
