Life in the Partial Shade—A Chaotic Palm Tree Revue

Special Event: Thursday, August 13, 2026 | 7:00 p.m.

Palmen Tropenhaus

Palmen Tropenhaus

Palm trees are places of longing made of leaves—they symbolize vacations, faraway places, and tropical paradises. But behind their iconic silhouettes lies a fascinating cultural and natural history.

Together, Judith Schalansky—writer and editor of the “Naturkunden” series—and author Jutta Person embark on a quest for clues that is as insightful as it is entertaining. In a literary revue, they bring to life the voices of those who have admired, researched, collected, and exploited palm trees. Spanning botany, cultural history, and pop culture, a surprising perspective unfolds on a plant that is far more than mere decoration: from date syrup to photo wallpaper, from Palmin to a fetish plant.

Look forward to an evening that is as informative as it is entertaining, dedicated to one of the world’s most fascinating plants—it doesn’t get any more “palm-y” than this.

Jutta Person is a literary scholar, journalist, and author of the *Naturkunden* volumes *Donkeys*, *Corals*, and *Palms*.

Judith Schalansky is a multi-award-winning writer and editor of the successful *Naturkunden* series.

The event is being held in cooperation with Matthes & Seitz Berlin Verlag.

The evening is based on the newly published book *Palms: A Portrait* by Jutta Person, published in the *Naturkunden* series edited by Judith Schalansky and published by Matthes & Seitz Berlin Verlag.
